When you were a child, haven't you experienced gazing crazy at soft vinyls of Ultra Monsters in toy stores? Many people would also have memories of taking favorite monsters in hand and playing reproducing famous scenes seen on TV. What calls up such nostalgia is the Ultra Monster Series continuing from 1983. And this time, from “Ultra Big Monster Series 5000EX”, the giant plant Juran familiar to tokusatsu fans, commonly known as Mammoth Flower, appeared. Picking up monsters that were not commercialized in the same series so far, it is a project irresistible for collectors. Moreover speaking of Juran, it is a unique existence possessing appearances completely different from general monsters. Not animal-types nor alien-types, original settings where giant flowers themselves become targets of fear remain in impression. For long-year Ultra series fans, isn't it a soft vinyl that cannot be missed?
What Juran appears in is Episode 4 “Mammoth Flower” of tokusatsu work “Ultra Q”. In this episode, bulbs of ancient plants sleeping long deep underground are speculated to have started activity again through environmental changes. And, anomalies occur in the city of Tokyo. Eerie roots extending from underground attack people, finally breaking through Tokyo Advertising Agency buildings giant flowers reveal their figures. Please try imagining. What if giant plants suddenly project from always familiar urban buildings? Differing from scenes where normal monsters rampage, there is frightfulness as if familiar nature itself bares fangs at humans, isn't there? Juran is a dangerous existence not only making flowers bloom, but releasing harmful pollen as well. Unexpectedness where flowers supposed to be beautiful threaten cities precisely would be one of the reasons this monster remains in memories for a long time.
Frightfulness of Juran is not that giant appearance alone. Roots extending to various places in Tokyo have sharp thorns, possessing astonishing properties of absorbing human blood. Furthermore, main bodies of flowers appearing on ground scatter toxic pollen, bringing serious damage to surroundings. Even though plants, they are equipped with aggressiveness like creatures aiming at prey. Moreover troublesome, even if cutting roots or dousing with flame throwers, there are almost no effects. Then, how was this monster defeated? In the show, Dr. Genda developed special chemicals fixing carbon dioxide necessary for photosynthesis of plants. By spraying that chemical, Juran withers as if melting. Developments removing threats utilizing plant ecologies rather than simple military power are also “Ultra Q”-like fun incorporating scientific ideas.
“Ultra Big Monster Series 5000EX Juran” released this time is made into a 3D figure at sizes of total height about 19cm. Being able to appreciate unique motifs named giant plants at hand is a charm. Even when lined up with general monster soft vinyls, characteristic figures maining flowers seem likely to catch eyes conspicuously. PVC is adopted for materials, set contents being 1 Juran main unit. Target ages are 15 years old and over. Speaking of soft vinyls, friendliness able to take in hand and enjoy is a feature, but this product lets you feel funs collecting monsters appearing in past tokusatsu works as well. For people collecting Ultra Monster Series for many years, by adding Juran possessing personalities different from lineups so far, wouldn't changes be born in atmospheres of display spaces as well?
One of the reasons Ultra Monster Series is patronized for a long time is being able to feel various monsters closely beyond eras. However, in the Ultra series, countless colorful monsters appear, and not all have been made into soft vinyls. So what wants attention drawn is “Ultra Big Monster Series 5000EX” lining up monsters not blessed with opportunities of commercialization so far. Like Juran, existences unable to meet easily as standard products while leaving intense impressions being made into 3D figures would be pleasing events for tokusatsu fans. Especially “Ultra Q” is a work possessing unique weirdness or SF elements connecting to later Ultra series. In Mammoth Flower symbolizing that worldview joining present-day soft vinyl collections, special meanings can be felt.
